Sustainability is at the core of everything we do at CCSL and we take great pride in showcasing our various sustainable initiatives. Before we go any further, let’s define sustainability and what it means when talking about all things workplace catering.
Sustainability means meeting our own needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
In the context of workplace catering, sustainability refers to feeding people healthy food, made with ingredients that are local and seasonal, while ensuring food waste is minimised. Adopting a sustainable workplace food programme can bring a plethora of benefits to your team, your company, your community and planet Earth.
What exactly do sustainable catering companies do?
When you work with a corporate catering company that promotes sustainable food consumption, it means that your employees will be eating meals that are locally and seasonally produced, instead of ingredients flown half-way around the world.
Why is this important?
By sourcing sustainable, locally sourced produce it results in fewer food miles, less fossil fuels used in transportation and therefore lower carbon footprint. As well as this, sustainable food consumption supports local economies and communities. At CCSL, we pride ourselves on working with local suppliers as we get to use seasonal produce in our ingredients for your teams!
What can we do to prevent food waste in our restaurants?
Food waste is also a significant contributor to climate change. In Ireland we waste about 1 million tonnes of food each year, according to current best estimates. Growing, processing and transporting food uses a huge amount of resources, such as land, water, energy and fertiliser. If food is wasted, these resources are wasted too.
It is estimated that food waste generates about 8% to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Reducing food waste is therefore an effective climate action.
Preventing food waste should be prioritised, and any unavoidable food waste should be treated in the most resource efficient way possible. Diverting food waste from landfill has environmental and financial benefits, and the benefits of preventing food waste are even greater.
At CCSL, we work incredibly hard to prevent food waste in all our restaurants. We have introduced new initiatives to reduce the harmful impact of food waste. The food we choose, where it comes from, and how it ends up on our plate is one of the most impactful decisions for the future of our planet, and it is a choice that we make more than three times a day.
Most recently, we joined a worldwide movement #OnePlanetPlate. One Planet Plate is a worldwide restaurant campaign to address the inherent problems in our food system. This initiative gives our chefs the opportunity to show how they’re contributing to a better food future, and to empower us all to think about and act upon our own food choices, too.
